The Anodic Oxidation of Carbon Fibers to Enhance Interfacial Adhesion between Carbon Fiber and Epoxy Resin

Abstract
The anodic oxidation of PAN-based carbon fiber was carried out in aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution to improve mechanical and chemical properties of carbon fiber. A prepreg of the carbon fiber epoxy resin was prepared and then fabricated into a laminate to study the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the matrix resin. The results of the study were summerized as follows : 1) The increase in tensile strength of treated carbon fiber was more than 11% over that value for untreated fiber, which seems to be due to removal or etching-off of the defect site of carbon fiber surface. 2) The change of BET-surface area of the treated carbon fiber by anodic oxidation was not so significant. 3) IR absorption spectra of the oxidized carbon fiber showed the absorption bands at 3450, 2923, 1720, and 1400cm-1, for νOH, νCH, νC=O and νC-O respectively, and the peak intensity was increased with an increase of current. 4) The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) values of the composites using the oxidized fiber were increased by about 60% over those of the composites based on the untreated carbon fiber. This might be due to an increase of the amount of the surface functional groups and also to an improved mechanical properties of the fiber as a result of anodic oxidation.
NaHCO3 수용액에서 PAN계 탄소섬유의 물리, 화학적 성질을 개선하기 위해서 탄소섬유를 양극산화한 후 탄소섬유-epoxy 복합재료(CFRP)를 제조하기 위해서 prepreg를 감은 후 적층성형 함으로써 탄소섬유와 epoxy resin간의 계면결합력을 조사하였다. 실험결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 탄소섬유의 인장강도는 탄소섬유 표면의 defect가 제거되어 표면처리 되지 않은 섬유보다 11% 이상 증가하였다. 2) 양극산화 후 BET 표면적의 변화는 매우 작았다. 3) 표면처리한 탄소섬유의 FT-IR spectrum은 νOH, νCH, νC=O 그리고 νC-O이 각각 3450, 2923, 1720, 그리고 1400cm-1에서 나타났으며 이들의 peak intensity는 전류가 증가함에 따라 증가하였다. 4) 양극산화 후 복합재료의 ILSS(Interlaminar Shear Strength)값은 표면처리 되지 않은 값보다 약 60% 증가 하였는데 이는 양극산화를 하므로써 표면의 관능기가 증가함과 아울러 표면처리된 탄소섬유의 기계적 물성이 향상되었기 때문일 것으로 추정되었다.
