Abstract
A new APP/VC copolymer was prepared by graft copolymerizing vinyl chloride (VC) onto atactic polypropylene (APP). The degree of grafting was determined by fractionation on the basis of the different solution behavior of the copolymers or homopolymers. Some crosslinks by APP as a side reaction were observed from the measurements of molecular weight and chlorine content in the copolymers. The keto allyl group which governs the thermal stability of the VC unit in the graft chain of the copolymer was examined by IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy and the results showed to increase with increasing the relative amount of APP to VC. The tensile strength of the copolymer decreased but the impact strength increased with the increase of APP content. Especially, the copolymer containing about 2 wt% of APP was found to have about twice impact strength of homo PVC. In the graft copolymerization of VCM onto APP, the relative reactivity of the three kinds of protons contained in the structure unit of APP was examined by FT-lR spectroscopy and the results showed to decrease in the order, methine>methylene>methyl.
