Abstract
The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) and 2-vinylnaphthalene(2-VN) onto ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) was carried out with benzoyl peroxide(BPO) as an initiator in tetrahydrofuran(THF) at 80℃ for 60 hrs. The synthesizwd graft copolymer, MMA-EPDM-2-VN(MEV2), was identified by IR spectrum. In order to investigate the radiation resistance of the MEV2 the light resistance, tensile properties and thermal stabilith of the graft copolymer before and after γ-ray radiation were investigated. Grafting efficiency was 47% and number average molecular weight(Mn) was 90,000. the light resistance, radiation resistance, and thermal stablilty of MEV2 were better than those of ABS. Three kinds of blends containing MEV2 with poly(vinylchloride)(PVC), Poly(methacrylate)(PMMA) and polycarbonate(PC) were prepared by casting from their THF and chloroform solutions, respectively. Miscibility of MEV2 with PC was shown better than that with PVC or PMMA from the differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and fluorescence spectroscopic studies, even though all of the blends showed phase separation.
