As a part of the project to investigate the effect of surface modification of fiber on the physical properties or performance of carbon fiber reinforced composites based on thermoplastic resins, the coupling agent. high density polyethylene(HDPE)-g-Polyacrylamide(PAAm), has been synthesized by the "inverse emulsion graft polymerization" technique. The polymerization was carried out at 88℃ using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator in the inverse emulsion system formed by mixing AAm aqueous solution with HDPE(MW=ca. 20,000) in toluene containing Tween
#80 emulsifier. The reaction has been confirmed through use of optical microscope to proceed via adsorption and immobilization of HDPE molecules onto the surface of emulsifier colloid particles formed. From the analysis of the effects of various polymerization conditions on the grafting, it has also been found that the present reaction system can easily yield high(over 90%) grafting efficiency and AAm conversion, and hundreds percents of percent grafting value.
