2-Hydroxyalkyl methacrylate polymer have been considered as biomaterial for medical applications. These polymers swell in water to become soft hydrogels. The hydrogels are widely used in the preparation of burn dressing, soft contact lens and artificial membranes. The radical copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) has been studied in aqueous solution at 60℃. Azo-bis-isobutyronitrile(AIBN) has been used as an initiator. The compositions of the copolymers were quantitatively determined by the measurement of the unreacted hydroxyl group content by acetylation method. The reactivity ratios were calculated by Kelen-T d s method. The monomer reactivity ratios obtained are as follows:

2=0.90 for HEMA-AMPS system,

2=1.03 for HPMA-AMPS system.
The calculated Q and e factors by Alfrey-Price method are Q
2=0.97,

2=0.71 for HEMA-AMPS system and Q
2=0.94,

2=0.50 for HPMA-AMPS system. The swelling quantities of the
copolymer systems were measured at 25℃, 35℃ and 45℃, respectively. The
characterization of the copolymer has been investigated by infrared spectroscopy and
differential scanning calorimetry.
2-Hydroxyalkyl methacrylate 고분자는 의학용 생체 재료로써 고려되어 왔다. 이 고분자는 물에 팽윤되어 hydrogel이 되며 이러한 hydrogel은 burn dressing, soft contact lens, artificial membrane 등에 널리 사용되고 있다. α,α''-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile(AIBN)을 사용하여 60℃ 수용액 상에서 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) 및 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate(HPMA)를 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid(AMPS)와 라디칼 중합법에 의해서 공중합을 시켰다. 그 공중합체의 조성은 아세틸화 방법에 의해서 구했다. 그리고 Kelen-T d s 방법에 의해서 반응성비 r

2를 구하고 Alfrey-Price 방법에 의해서 AMPS의 Q
