Abstract
The aqueous polymerization of MMA initiated with Ce(Ⅳ)-oxalic acid redox system was studied at 25±0.2℃ under a nitrogen atmosphere. From the result of kinetic investigation, the rate of polymerization was found to be dependent on [M] and [Ce4+] but independent on [oxalic acid]. The yield and rate of polymerization were found to decrease in the presence of organic solvent, salts and cationic detergent. As the catalyst concentration increases, the molecular weight of the polymer decreases, but the total content of cerium in polymer increases. The DTA and TGA thermograms of PMMA and Ce-PMMA showed the different peaks by complex degradation process consisting of depropagation and termination reactions.

Ce(Ⅳ)-oxalic acid 산환 환원계에 의한 MMA의 수용성 중합을 질소하에 25±0.2℃에서 실시하였을 때 중합속도는 단량체 농도, [M]와 Ceric 이온 농도, [Ce4+]에 좌우되나 옥살산 농도 [oxalic acid]에는 큰 영항을 받지 않았다. 유기용매, 무기염 그리고 양이온 계면활성제 등을 첨가했을 때 중합율과 중합속도는 감소되고, 촉매농도를 증가시킬 경우 중합체 분자량은 감소되나 중합체내의 cerium량은 증가되었다. PMMA와 Ce-PMMA에 대한 DTA와 TGA 열 분석에 의하면 분해 반응과 종결반응 등의 복잡한 과정으로 서로 다른 피크를 나타내었다.
