Abstract
Miscibility of blends of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) with vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol(VAc-VAL) copolymers of different compositions has been investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicate that P4VP is miscible with VAc-VAL copolymers containing more than 30 mole% VAL. Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) analysis of the miscible blends of P4VP with VAc-VAL copolymers reveal the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between hydroxyl groups and vinyl pyridines. High temperature infrared spectroscopic analysis of VAc-VAL copolymers and P4VP/VAc-VAL blends indicate that there are at least three competing processes for hydrogen bonding to the hydroxyl groups in the blends : hydroxyl-hydroxyl. hydorxyl-carbonyl. and hydroxyl-pyridine associations. : hydroxyl-hydroxyl. hydorxyl-carbonyl. and hydroxyl-pyridine associations.
