Abstract
To improve the relatively low compressive strength of well known poly( p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA or Kevlar) as a high-performance extended-chain polymer, PPTA copolymers containing crosslinkable group were prepared and their thermal properties were examined. Crosslinkable moiety was introduced to aramid backbone by using a comonomer, 1,4-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene, possessing a similar reactivity with terephthaloyl chloride, in the typical low-temperature solution polymerization. The resulting polymers undergo crosslinking 'curing' reaction at 300∼ 400℃ (max. at about 350℃) without generation of volatile small molecules. Copolymers with different comonomer content were prepared and their thermal property was studied using DSC & TGA. Also the change in chemical structure accompanying the reaction was observed qualitatively from IR spectroscopy and solubility test.

고강도 내열성 고분자인 poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) PPTA의 비교적 약한 압축 물성을 개선하기 위한 분자 개질의 한 방법으로서 고온 가교 그룹을 함유한 PPTA 공중합체를 합성하고 그들의 열적성질을 조사하였다. 가교그룹은 terephthaloyl chloride와 유사한 반응성을 갖는 1,4-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene을 PPTA 중합에 공단량체로 사용하여 공중합을 통해 도입되며 약 350℃ 전후에서 열적 가교반응을 유도한다. 서로 다른 함량의 공단량체를 함유한 일련의 공중합체를 합성하여 그들의 열적성질을 DSC와 TGA를 통해 조사하고, 가교반응에 따른 분자구조의 변화를 IR과 용해도의 차이로부터 분석하였다.
