Abstract
1-[4-(6-Hydroxyhexyloxy)phenyl]-4-phenylbutadiyne (3) was prepared by coupling reaction of 4-ethynylphenol with phenylacetylene. Sodium salts of compound 3 were reacted with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyltrichloride to yield the benzene derivative containing three diacetylenic groups. Crystal growth was investigated from the melt of compound 4 on the substrate such as glass, NaCl single crystal, and rubbed polyimide film. In all cases spherulites were formed. IR analysis showed that most of the diacetylene groups were consumed in thermal polymerization of compound 4 at 290℃ for 10 min. In UV polymerization at 134 ℃ only 35% were converted to polymer, indicating one of three diacetylenic groups of each monomer was polymerized.
