Abstract
Poly(α-methylstyrene)(PαMS) and polyisoprene(PIP) are immiscible with each other. Cyclohexane is a poor solvent for PαMS but a good one for PIP. A phase diagram of the ternary system consisting of these compounds was determined by observing the phase change arising from the different affinity to the solvent and the variation of polymer compositions. PαMS, synthesized by anionic bulk polymerization, was fractionated by successive reprecipitation and column elution methods to give a series of fractions having number average molar mass(Mn) range of 6.5×105 to 5.2×104g/mo1. The Mn values found for the commercial PIP were ranged from 4.0×105 to 2.7×104g/mo1. Two fractions having similar Mn were used for the phase equilibrium study. Cloud points were determined by turbidity titrations. Concentration determinations for the separated phases lead to the construction of coexistence curves. Temperature range observed was 12∼45℃. The χ12t function of PαMS and PIP in the ternary system was determined by using the data of binodal.
