Abstract
Amphoteric latices were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of mixtures of styrene, N,N''-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid using potassium persulfate as the initiator. The size of latex particles as well as the size distribution were qreatly affected by pH of the system and concentration of the initiator. pH is an important factor for stability of the latex, which is stable either below pH 5 or above pH 8. The charge density on the latex surface ranges from 25 to 40μC/cm2a by means of conductivity measurement. Centrifugation of the neutralized latex system qreatly shortens the time required to find the isoelectric point.

개시제로서 potassium persulfate를 사용하여 styrene과 N,N''-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate 및 methacrylic acid를 무유화제 유화중합을 시켜 amphoteric latex를 합성하였다. 라텍스의 입자크기와 균일도는 중합매질의 pH와 개시제의 농도에 크게 영향을 받는다. 중합매질의 pH는 라텍스의 안정성에도 중요한 인자였으며, pH5이하 pH8이상에서 안정하게 중합되었다. 전도도 측정에 의하여 구한 라텍스의 표면전하밀도는 25에서 40μC/cm2의 범위이었다. 투광도법으로 amphoteric latex계의 pH변화에 따른 등전점을 측정 할 수 있었다.
