New polyamides, poly(p-phenylene p-phenylenediacrylamide) (p-PPDA), poly(m-phenylene p-phenylenediacrylamide) (m-PPDA), poly(hexamethylene p-phenylenediacrylamide) (HPDA) and poly(octamethylene p-phenylenediacrylamide) (OPDA), were synthesized from p-phenylene diacryloylchloride and several diamines by both solution and interfacial polycondensation. In the cases of HPDA and OPDA including aliphatic chains, the degree of polymerization was not affected by the polymerization method or by the polymerization conditions. However, in the cases of p-PPDA and m-PPDA, the degree of polymerization was greatly affected by both the method and the conditions. Investigation of X-ray diffraction pattern exhibited that the major diffraction angels of p-PPDA were similar to those of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide). According to thermogravimetric analysis, the decomposition of HPDA and OPDA was initiated in the vicinity of 300℃, but p-PPDA and m-PPDA showed good thermal stability with initial decomposition temperature of above 400℃.
