Abstract
The second-stage styrene polymerization in the presence of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) core was evaluated. Surfactant-free emulsion polymerization was conducted with potassium persulfate as an initiator. The rate of polymerization and the molecular weight of polystyrene, polymerized in the second-stage, were observed to be increased with increasing amount of PMMA core. That might be explained by "gel effect". Reactions were affected by the gel effect from the beginning of the reaction, when the PMMA core/styrene ratios were 75/25 and 50/50.
